Frequently Asked Questions
of RareSteeds
RareSteeds leaves the matter of defining which breeds are rare to experts,
the American Livestock Breeds Conservancy (ALBC). They have a very
well defined set of criteria that can be found at their web page entitled,
"Parameters
for Livestock Breeds on ALBC Conservation Priority List".
It sometimes takes ALBC a while to ascertain if a breed indeed meets their
criteria. In that interim period we will list apparently rare equine
breeds on our "Other Rare Equine Breeds
Resource" page. If you know of a rare equine breed that
should be listed on this page along with some URLs for relevant sites dealing
with that breed, please email us and
let us know.

What do we mean by rare and related
designations?
RareSteeds does not sell equines, nor are we a broker of equines. We
are a non-profit organization focused on connecting people interested in rare
equine breeds with information about the breeds and each other. We hope
that information contained on our web site will help you find what you seek when
it comes to rare equine breeds ... including getting you hooked up with breeders
and those who are selling animals of the breed you seek.
If you are interested in finding an equine companion of one of these rare
breeds, we suggest that you review the breed-specific
resources for the breed for which you are interested. Included in
these resources are a list of breeders, boosters and owners of the breed.
In some cases, where breed organizations maintain extensive contact lists for
breeders and owners, rather than attempt to replicate and maintain those lists
our resource page contains a link to the breed organization's list. Just
keep following the links to you find what you seek.
Some of the equine-focused directories, indices and search engines contain
resources and utilities to help you find breeders. Some of these resources
can be found on our more general
resources page. As we find particularly good resources for
locating breeders, brokers and sellers of rare equine breeds we will add links to them here.
The lists of breeders & boosters for some breeds are quite specific in
that they list contact information for breeders & boosters. Lists for
other breeds only provide links to lists maintained by other
organizations. Sometimes only breeders and boosters with web pages are
listed in RareSteeds' list.
Our goal is to be able to provide the most, the most complete and the most
enduring information
on rare equine breeds. In order to do that we try to
leverage the wonderful, on-going work of breed organizations as much as we can.
Where they maintain a list of breeders & boosters on-line we will opt to
point to that list rather than replicate it and have to keep it up to date.
Where breed organizations maintain this information, but don't offer it on-line,
we will encourage them to provide it on-line on their own web sites and we will
provide a link to it. If they chose not to provide the information on-line
we will seek their permission to put the information on-line on our
breed-specific resource page.
In order to provide ready access to web resources for rare equine breeds we
often list web sites of breeders, boosters and owners of rare equine breeds on
our breed-specific resource pages. We do this even when these folks are
already listed in the directories of breed-specific organizations. In many
cases it is difficult to find the web sites of these folks, so we are trying to
make it easier. Where there are quite few we try to organize the list by
region to make it easier for folks to find breeders, boosters and owners of rare
equine breeds near them.
