The Murthwaite farm is located in Ravenstondale Parish, Cumbria. The farm belongs to the Fell ponies and Swaledale sheep, Rough Fell sheep and crosses of these sheep who still roam the fells as did their ancestors for time immemorial.
The highly successful Murthwaite Fell ponies have been bred for over 40 years with an everlasting enthusiasm and interest for the breed. Murthwaite Fell ponies are predominately black, but there are also grey, brown and bay. All of livestock at Murthwaite is listed as endangered by the Rare Breeds Survival Trust.
Staying out on the harsh fells year round has helped to give these ponies their hardiness, toughness, soundness, surefootedness, alertness and ability. Their willing, steady character honed with careful selection have helped to make them what they are today.

Once broken in and trained properly they are carrying a child as easily as any adult, pulling a carriage, competing well in marathon competitions, dressage, showjumping, crosscountry, or fulfilling the need of a leisure pony for the whole family as well as being really suitable (with the adequate training) for work with the disabled.
For further and official information about the breed we advise you to visit the Fell Pony Society's Website.
