How we came to Fell Ponies

The Friesian mare with two of our Fell
Ponies Linda and Lucky. Spring 2001

As I write this in the spring of 2001 we have 11 horses and ponies of different breeds (Friesian, Shetlands, Mini-Appaloosa's and one mistreated Thoroughbred).  All have become very reliable.

When we bought our first Fell Pony, Drybarrows Linda, we totally fell in love with Fell ponies.  After that we became more and more interested in Fell ponies, their origin, their breeders etc.  Finally we decided to work with Fell ponies exclusively.  Of course selling our other horses and ponies was easier said than done as it hurts very much to sell those you already love so much and to whom you are very attached and you know so well.

Our idea's and philosophy

Chantal & Bruce

We share trust and respect with our horses and ponies.  That is why they are willing, loving and easy to work with.  We were never afraid to start riding or driving them as there is nothing abnormal about it for them.  To be able to enjoy the results when riding, driving or just watching them being satisfied and happy, pays us back all the hours we have spent working for them (what we do most of the time).  They're the joy of our lives

Our Concerns

Drybarrows gathered in - Spring 2001
Drybarrows gathered in - Spring 2001

We are concerned about the future of the Fell ponies in the fells and away from the fells for many reasons.  How can we contribute to conserve this breed as it is/was and how are we going to keep them as true to type as possible?  We should try to find a way in between I guess.  And someday we hope to provide them a home in the foothills of Calgary if we manage to make our dreams come true.

Murthwaite Fells

We welcome anyone with interest in the breed to come and visit us.

We are building a herd of Fell ponies for our stud that are true to the traditional Fell pony type.

Special Thanks

We want to thank Mr. C. Thompson - Drybarrows, Mr. Thomas B. Capstick - Murthwaite, Caroline Singer of the FPS and all the others we've met and will be meeting who took and will take time for us, to help us, inform us and who share their time, thoughts, knowledge and enthusiasm for this breed with us and let us have one or more of their beautiful ponies.
